What it actually does
The BiteX BR90 is a small handheld device that zaps an insect bite with a brief burst of concentrated heat, around 51 degrees Celsius, right on the skin. The idea is that the heat disrupts the proteins in the venom or saliva causing the itch response. No cream, no chemicals, no waiting for antihistamines to kick in. Just hold it on the bite, press the button, done in a few seconds.
Personally, I was sceptical the first time I used something like this on a midge bite in Scotland. Absolutely brutal midge situation, for the record. But the relief was quick and, crucially, it lasted longer than any cream I had with me.
Who this is for
If you camp, travel abroad, or just spend time in gardens during summer, this makes real sense to own. Parents with kids who react badly to bites will find it useful. It's also worth noting there's a children's mode with a slightly lower temperature setting.
It is not for anyone who wants to avoid the mild sting of the heat pulse, which is real, if brief. And if you're after something for severe allergic reactions, this obviously isn't it, see a doctor for that.
The honest bit
At roughly thirteen quid it's not expensive, but there's no comparison price here to get excited about, this isn't a clearance deal. What you're paying for is a device that actually works and lasts years. The battery is replaceable, the build feels solid enough. For a one-off summer purchase you'll pull out every year, the value stacks up fine.
