Who actually needs this

Honestly, if you're a casual snapper who just points and shoots on Instagram, this probably isn't for you. But if you're the sort who films family holidays, skateboarding clips, or even light vlogging content and keeps wincing at the wobble, the Osmo Mobile 7 is proper good kit for the money.

I lent one to a mate who was filming his kid's school play. He'd tried a cheap knockoff gimbal before and spent half the performance fighting the balancing mechanism. The DJI, by contrast, clipped on in about thirty seconds and just got on with it. Smooth, steady footage throughout. He was chuffed.

What it actually does well

The magnetic phone clamp is a genuine upgrade over older clip designs. No fiddling about. The stabilisation itself is spot on, particularly for walking shots where every other option turns you into a human earthquake.

The ActiveTrack feature, which keeps a subject in frame automatically, works better than you'd expect at this price point. Not perfect, but not half bad either.

One honest reservation

It is a gimbal, which means it adds bulk. If you travel light and hate carrying extra gear, you'll probably leave it at home after the first few trips. Also, the companion app can be a bit clunky on older Android phones. Worth checking compatibility before you buy.

For anyone regularly filming on their phone and wanting results that don't look like they were shot during a minor earthquake, this is a sensible buy at the current price.
