What you're actually getting

A Le Creuset mug is not a complicated thing. It's 350ml, stoneware, available in Azure or Bamboo, and it feels exactly how you'd hope it would: solid, weighty in the hand, a bit like the French cookware it takes its name from. The glaze is thick and even, and the handle is wide enough that you don't feel like you're pinching a teacup. That matters more than people think at 7am.

Personally, I had one of these knocking around a mate's kitchen for a weekend away. Made a coffee in it on the Saturday morning, sat by the window. The thing kept the heat noticeably longer than the bog-standard mugs in the cupboard. Small detail, but it's the kind you remember.

Who this actually suits

If you're a committed daily coffee or tea person, this makes sense as an everyday mug you actually look forward to using. The colours are calm, not garish, so it fits most kitchens without trying too hard.

It's less obvious as a gift unless you know the person is fussy about their kit. Some people find the Le Creuset name a bit over the top for a mug, and fair enough really.

My one reservation: 350ml is on the smaller side. If you're a two-big-mug-of-tea-before-you-can-function type, you might find yourself back at the kettle sooner than you'd like.

At under twelve quid though, it's not a stretch. It's a well-made thing that'll outlast most of the mugs you own already. Not a bargain exactly, more like paying a fair price for something that won't annoy you.
