A pen that's older than most of your furniture
The Jotter has been around since the mid-fifties. Parker didn't reinvent anything here, and that's sort of the point. Classic Red finish, stainless steel trim, a medium nib that's consistent and not scratchy. It's not glamorous. It's just a reliable, good-looking pen that does the job without making a fuss.
I picked one up a while back mostly out of curiosity, expecting something plasticky and forgettable. It's actually got a bit of heft to it. Not heavy, but present in the hand. The kind of thing that makes signing a letter feel marginally more civilised than scribbling with a biro from the kitchen drawer.
Who this is actually for
Honestly, this is the perfect first fountain pen. If you've been curious about them but didn't want to spend forty quid on something you might not get on with, this is the sensible starting point. It takes standard international cartridges so you're not locked into anything fiddly.
It's also spot on as a gift. Looks the part, comes in a decent box, and nobody's going to be offended receiving it.
One reservation
The medium nib is medium in a fairly generous sense. If you write small or you're after fine linework, it might feel a touch broad. A fine nib version exists if that bothers you. Also, at under seven quid, don't expect the smoothest writing experience of your life. It's good for the price, not good full stop. But for most people writing day-to-day? Not half bad at all.
