What £249 gets you in 2025

At this price, a 55-inch 4K LED TV with Ambilight is, frankly, hard to argue with on paper. Philips has fitted the 55PUS8200 with their Pixel Precise processing, Dolby Atmos audio, and Titan OS, which is a relatively clean smart platform compared to the ad-heavy experiences on some competitors. For a second room, a first TV for a student flat, or a budget lounge upgrade, the value proposition is real.

The honest bit about LED at this price

Here's the segment-wide weakness nobody puts in the press release: budget LED panels at this size struggle with local dimming and black levels. You will notice it in dark scenes. Ambilight is genuinely lovely and does make films feel more immersive, but it cannot compensate for a panel that lacks contrast. If you watch a lot of cinema in a darkened room, an OLED or a QLED at a higher price point will give you a noticeably better picture. For sport, news, and daytime viewing, you probably won't care.

Titan OS and the smart layer

Titan OS is newer and leaner than Google TV, which is either a pro or a con depending on your app habits. Netflix, Prime and Disney+ are there. Niche streaming apps may be missing. Worth checking your specific services before committing.

So, is it worth it?

For a primary living room telly used mainly for sport, TV dramas, and casual streaming, yes, at £249 this is solid. Ambilight alone usually adds £50-80 to comparable sets. The ceiling is clear but so is the floor. Just don't buy it expecting OLED-level picture quality and you won't be disappointed.
