Still the real thing
There's something almost stubborn about sherbet lemons. Every few years some artisan confectioner tries to reinvent them, and yet here we are, still reaching for the Maynards Bassetts bag. The hard lemon candy shell is exactly as it should be: properly tart, not that weak citrusy flavour you get from cheaper imitators. And the sherbet fizz inside still does the thing it's supposed to do.
I opened a bag last week sat in front of the telly and got through about six before I noticed. That's the test, honestly.
Who this is actually for
Look, if you're after some sophisticated sugar experience, move along. But if you want a 162g bag of reliable, nostalgic British sweets for less than a pound, this is spot on. Good for:
- Sticking in a desk drawer and forgetting about until 3pm
- Long drives where you need something to suck on
- Kids who haven't discovered them yet (lucky them, honestly)
The Subscribe and Save price drops it to 85p, which is where the deal gets genuinely interesting. At that price you're not really thinking twice.
One honest reservation
The bag size. 162g sounds decent but it goes faster than you'd expect, especially if you're sharing. And the individual sweets are individually wrapped, which some people find a bit fiddly. Minor gripes, both of them. At 85p a bag, expecting more would be a bit rich.
This is not a flashy deal. It's just a very reasonable price on something that's been quietly excellent for decades.
